Laser For Pigmented spots on skin

Laser/Intense pulsed light for pigmented spots

Gently smooth away the years.  Pigmented spots on the back of your hands and on your face are a tell-tale sign of age, yet they’re often ‘missing’ from Hollywood stars and media celebrities – so how do they do it?

You may heard them called ‘liver-spots’, they’re usually caused by over-exposure to the sun over the years and sometimes due to genetic influence.  Freckles, sun-spots, liver-spots or age-spots.  Whatever you call them, they are commonly associated with older skin and can put years on your true age!  Now you can take those years off again here at The Brookdale Clinic.

Unwanted pigmented spots, including patches on the neck caused by perfume, can be effectively removed with laser IPL.  Our Laser expert Josna has treated many pigmented areas and works hard to ensure that you get the results you want.

How does the treatment for pigmented spots work?IPL Sun Spot removal at The Brookdale Clinic

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) brown spot removal works through firing short bursts of intense light at the skin, using a tiny hand-piece designed specifically for this purpose.  The colour in the pigmented cells absorbs the light, which causes them to heat up and be destroyed.  As the epidermis (surface of the skin) replenishes itself the melanin rises to the surface of the skin where it dries to form a micro-crust, gradually flaking away leaving clear skin.  You might see is a slight darkening of the pigmented spots that have been treated followed by a very fine ‘dry’ patch which will disappear very quickly.  The whole process takes around 7-14 days after treatment.

These pictures showing treatment to a sun spot on the side of the face demonstrate just how effective just laser treatment can be at reducing pigmented spots!

How long does it take?

Treatment time depends on how many pigmented spots being treated.  Treatment can take place at monthly intervals for up to 3 months, depending on the depth of pigment colour.

We’ll undertake a detailed consultation with you so that you’re comfortable with the process. Any pre-existing conditions that could affect the results should be disclosed.  To make sure you skin won’t react adversely to the IPL, we’ll do a ‘patch-test’ first.  If you’ve no adverse reactions to this small test, you’re good to go ahead with the full treatment.

How long does it last?

Once pigment cells are destroyed they can’t produce more melanin, so the brown spot will disappear.  If your pigmented spot is due to sun-exposure, the skin damage remains, so further unprotected sun-exposure may create new pigment cells.  We always advise use of a high SPF protection sun cream to protect skin from further damage.

How many sessions will I need?

Up to 3 sessions may be required depending on the depth of colour of the pigment.  See our current prices here.

Does it hurt?

The treatment can sting a little because we’re using IPL to create heat to destroy the pigment cells and as this builds up it may be felt.  Some describe it as like flicking an elastic band across your skin.  The laser flashes incredibly quickly, so it is only a very brief sensation.  We apply a cooling gel before starting, plus offer the use of a cold air jet to cool the skin as treatment continues.

Are there any side-effects?

As with all treatments affecting the skin there are of course small risks of side-effects.  Immediately after treatment your skin may feel a little sore, but likely will be very mild.  Depending on your skin type there may be some slight reddening of the area treated.  We apply cooling aloe vera gel to reduce any inflammation.  Any redness or warm sensation will only last a few hours – possibly overnight – leaving no ill-effects.
